Time Management

  • Time management is about focusing on results, not on being busy.  Many people spend their days in a flurry of activity, but achieve very little because they are not concentrating on the right things.

  • The secret to time management is The 80::20 Rule— 80% of the impact comes from 20% of the effort, IF you focus on the right things to get the results you want.

  • Time Management Tools include:

  • Personal Goal Setting—Deciding your personal priorities

  • Costing Your Time—Determining how much your time is worth

  • Deciding Work Priorities—Concentrating on the right things

  • Activity Logs—Learning how you really spend your time

  • Action Plans—Planning to solve a problem or complete a task

  • Prioritized To Do Lists—Tackling the right tasks first

  • Effective Scheduling—Planning to use your time best

  • Life is full of surprises, so we need to manage our time with that in mind. To maximize planned and scheduled work time, we also need to build in time for fire-fighting, plan for inevitable interruptions, and even schedule time to recharge. This may sound counter- intuitive, but remember the 80::20 Rule!.

  • Certain behaviors can really get in your way. Do you love a crisis? Are you a procrastinator? Do they call you Chatty-Cathy? Can you  never say no? In the end, time management is all about YOU.  The key to time management is knowing ourselves, as we can't actually "manage" time; but we can manage our own behavior.

Getting in Gear can show you how to recognize the ways in which you sabotage yourself, and how to use the tools and techniques of time management to get the job done.
